Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Dr. Oral Buyukozturk is Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts. His research interests include mechanics and design of structures and materials, durability and sustainability of physical infrastructure, nondestructive testing (NDT) , and structural health monitoring (SHM). His areas of research also include earthquake engineering, interface fracture mechanics, fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in structural rehabilitation, and multi-scale analysis of multi-layer material systems using molecular dynamics (MD). Educated in Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey, Dr. Oral Buyukozturk received his graduate degrees from Cornell University and joined The Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1976. His early work prior to joining MIT involved design and safety analysis of nuclear power structures and, at Brown University, his pioneering developments in the area of non-linear finite element models and computational engineering capabilities. Professor Buyukozturk has an extensive publication and professional service record and has presented keynote lectures worldwide. His awards, among others, include Golden Mirko Roš Medal of the Swiss Federal Research Laboratory for Materials Science and Technology; Fellow (non-resident) Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland’s National Academy of Science and Letters; 2008 and 2011 ASNT (American Society of Nondestructive Testing) National Faculty Fellowship Awards; various best paper awards; Fellow, American Concrete Institute (ACI).
